Care workers have been told they can breathe again.
The Home Secretary has dropped the plan that would have made many care workers wait 15 years before they could apply to settle in the UK. As reported, care workers who came before May 2025 and earn £25,000 can stay on the five year route, and other lower paid workers will wait 10 years rather than 15. The full rules and dates are still to be published.
Whatever your view on the policy, here's what I keep thinking about.
For months, the people who wash, feed and care for our parents have been doing that work not knowing whether their future here had just moved a decade away.
That kind of uncertainty doesn't stay at home. It walks into work. It shows up as anxiety, distraction, quiet job hunting, or people leaving the sector altogether.
If you manage care workers, three things this week
- Don't assume your team has heard, or understood. Acknowledge it at your next team meeting.
- Don't give immigration advice, however well meant. Point people to GOV.UK and to a regulated adviser. A wrong guess can cost someone their status.
- Check the detail before you change anything. The full rules and dates are still to come.
And say the thing people rarely hear at work: we value you, and we want you here.
Policy can change in a day. How people feel at work takes much longer to repair.
This is a workplace view, not immigration advice. For individual situations, use GOV.UK or an adviser regulated by the Immigration Advice Authority.
